Why twenty-five minutes
Twenty-five minutes is long enough to get properly into something and short enough that starting is not a decision you have to make. It is the classic stretch of the work-then-rest rhythm, a time-boxing method popularised in the late 1980s: one stretch of focused work, then a short break, then another one.
Nothing on this page enforces any of that. You press Start, and later you press Done. There is no schedule, no next session queued up behind you, and nobody keeping score.
What happens when the time is up
One bell rings, and the counter keeps going with a plus sign in front of it. Nothing closes, nothing is lost, and the timer does not get to decide that your thought is finished. Press Done when you are actually done — the extra minutes count as part of the stretch.
Afterwards it offers a cocoa break. Take it, or press Back to work. Both are allowed.
A longer or a shorter stretch
Drag the number, or use the arrow keys, and the same timer becomes any length from five minutes to three hours. The 25 here is only where this page starts.
Questions
- How do I start a 25 minute timer?
- Press Start. The number is already set to 25:00, so there is nothing to fill in and nothing to sign up for. If you want a different length, drag the number first.
- Does the timer keep running in a background tab?
- Yes. The end of a stretch is kept as a fixed moment in time rather than a count of ticks, so a background tab, a reload, or a laptop that went to sleep cannot make it drift. The tab's own title counts down too.
- Is this 25 minute timer free?
- Yes, and it stays free. No account, no sign-up, nothing to install, and no ads. The iPhone app is the paid part.
The timer here is the free part. On iPhone it also rings with the screen off and keeps the count on your lock screen.
